Denver Portrait Photographer | Welcome to my world.

A blog written by a Denver photographer, with photographs by that photographer, but not always about photography. Or for that matter, Denver.

I'm a dad!!!! To the new Sigma 85mm Art Lens!

I am incredibly happy to announce the newest member of my growing family!!!!!!

My new soulmate.

My new soulmate.

The newly released and HIGHLY anticipated Sigma 85mm 1.4 Art Lens has joined my gear!!!

When I decided to upgrade my gear before shooting my first professional wedding, I researched absolutely everything I was considering investing in to make sure that it would last me a long time. Despite the fact that I wanted a Nikon camera body, I took the recommendation of teacher Tony Northrup and purchased a third party lens. At that time, Sigma was beginning to release a new line of lenses called the Art series. In a nutshell, the rumor on the street was the lenses were way outperforming their Nikon and Canon equivalents, but at a fraction of the cost. I decided to try a 35mm. Then a 24-105. Then a 50. Basically, I got hooked.

85mm has been a VERY in demand lens for the Art series, as it's a fantastic focal length for portrait photography. Wide angle lenses often distort the subject a bit (think a big or oddly shaped nose, for example) and make terrible portrait lenses. The 85, though is perfect for faces and since most of my subjects are people I got RIGHT in line for the pre-order when Sigma announced its latest addition to the Art series.

The lens arrived this week and after an epic and dramatic unboxing, I decided to give it a test drive. Well, except that I had already purchased it and there was no way it was going back...but I digress. As I'm moving to Denver very soon and will have to start from square one, I haven't focused very much on building my client base in Maryland. In other words, I didn't have anybody to call and say, "hey! Let's do a photoshoot! Like, now." But not to fear: Gus Gus is here!

The youngest of my three dogs is Gus Gus. Well, his name is Gus. Ok, it's actually Gustavo Ortega, but do not get me started on why. Annnnyway, he's an adorable Pocket Beagle who is an incredible handful but not at all camera shy. So I pulled out my Nikon D750 body and for the first time this morning heard the click of my new 85mm as I attached it. And I could NOT be any happier with the results!!!!!!

Hello gorgeous.

Hello gorgeous.

All of the images of Gus were shot at the widest aperture of 1.4 and as you can see, the focal point (one of his eyes, in this case) remains RAZOR sharp! So amazing!!! Needless to say, I am absolutely in love with my new lens and cannot wait to try it out on human subjects!! I will be in Maryland for a couple more weeks and then off to Colorado, Connecticut, Ireland and England! Busy, busy!!!! But I hope to meet some of you humans that have been followers for a while and excited for you to become clients! In the meantime, please follow me on Instagram for more images from the 85mm Art as they start coming!!!
